Responsibilities

Description of General Duties:

  • Operates and maintains/repairs heavy equipment such as commercial trucks and trailers, cranes, clamshell buckets, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, all terrain forklifts, aerial boom lifts, bulldozers, rollers, and scrapers.
    • May read and interpret location and set grade and slope.
    • May fuel, grease, adjust, and make repairs to equipment. 
    • Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, fabricates, rebuilds and maintains power equipment.
  • Operates heavy power construction equipment such as compressors, pumps, hoists, shovels, trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, scrapers, and motor graders.
    •  Responsible for operating equipment to maintain roadways and firebreaks, by excavating, moving and   grading earth.
    •  Erects structural and reinforcing steel. 
    • Pours concrete or other road paving and construction materials. 
    • Perform loading, unloading, and lifting operations using heavy equipment. 
    • Repairs and maintains equipment.
  • Required to overhaul major assemblies, heavy-duty vehicles, ATVs, and heavy equipment.
    • Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects. 
    • Dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists and hand tools. 
    • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges. 
    • Welds broken parts and structural members. 
    • Must be able to operate industrial metal working equipment such as metal lathes, drill presses, gas and electric welding equipment. 
  • Provides bombing range maintenance support as required.
  • May be required to travel.
  • Documents maintenance actions in IEMS system.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience Requirements:

  • Five years’ experience in operating heavy equipment and maintaining roadways.
  • Three years related mechanical repair experience
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.

Minimum Position-Specific Training Required:

  • Formal technical vocational or mechanical courses
  • Heavy equipment operations training and certification
  • Possess a valid state Commercial Driver’s License
  • Obtain military vehicle operator’s certification

Citizenship and Security Clearance Requirements:

  • US Citizen
  • Obtain and maintain the appropriate level of clearance

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands: 

  • Heavy Equipment Operator/Mechanic may work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods.
  • The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching.
  • Position requires work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions.
  • The employee will perform strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting.
  • Frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment.
  • Frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.
  • Perform work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. 
  • They may work in both indoor and outdoor locations. Indoor environment may include exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, they sometimes work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes.
  • Work is performed on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Employees may be subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods.

Pay Range

USD $41.70 - USD $41.70 /Hr.
